Facing a Post Roe World:

Artists in Support of Abortion Funding in the Southeast

On June 9th, we showed up in force to help women in southern states retain their constitutionally protected right to abortion, despite the fact that the Supreme Court was poised imminently to curtail this basic freedom.

The stunning studio of iconic feminist painter Marilyn Minter was the perfect backdrop to showcase Alex Rudin’s powerful art, which was auctioned off to raise additional funds for ARC-Southeast. Alex graciously donated 50% of all the art sold that night.

Author and lawyer Julie Kay introduced the program by sharing her expertise on the current political landscape surrounding the abortion issue.  She stressed that many southern states already have the most stringent limitations on abortion, and that it will inevitably become nearly impossible for women there to get an abortion without traveling long distances.

We then heard from the extraordinary Oriaku Njoku, director of ARC-Southeast, whose warmth, poise, optimism and can-do attitude will enable many women to get the abortion care they seek and go on to lead the full lives that they deserve. Many of us were moved to tears by the stories Oriaku shared with us of some of the women that ARC has helped.

In conversation with Oriaku was the passionate abortion activist Alison Turkos. Alison offered us a roadmap as to what action we can take when the Supreme Court makes its seemingly inevitable decision, trigger laws go into effect, and half the women in the country lose their right to have an abortion in their own states.

Thanks to your incredible generosity, we raised approximately $125,000 and the money is still coming in!  A huge success, but in reality only enough to keep the abortion fund operational for less than a month.  If you would like to offer additional financial assistance, please donate here to ARC-Southeast and help women across the southeast to retain their right to reproductive freedom!
