OUR FOUNDING STORY
OUR FOUNDING STORY
As longtime supporters and activists in reproductive rights, we are frequently asked by our networks for recommendations of what to do and how to help. For years, we have been meeting informally to express our concerns over the declining access to abortion care in our country.
When Senate Bill 8 (SB8) went into effect in Texas in September 2021, women there effectively lost the right to abortion care. SB8 provides for a $10,000 reward to private citizens who successfully sue anyone who aids or abets an abortion after the 6th week of pregnancy. We were outraged and led to act. Trust Women, an independent clinic in Oklahoma handling the sudden surge of Texans desperately seeking care and with whom we had a longstanding relationship, was the obvious choice. We quickly convened our networks to meet with Trust Women leadership to learn firsthand about the dire situation there and to raise funds to help meet their urgent needs.
We quickly convened our networks to meet the Trust Women’s Executive Director to learn firsthand about the dire situation there and to raise funds to meet the urgent needs.
P.O.W.E.Repro was born.
OUR MISSION
P.O.W.E.Repro, Power of Women Engaging in Repro, is a growing coalition of women deeply engaged in supporting the urgent work of reproductive health and rights organizations. We are founded on the belief that access to abortion care is a human right and is fundamental to our dignity, equity and freedom. We act nimbly to identify and learn about the most relevant organizations working on the front lines, to engage in activism, and to provide financial support to those that have not had access to a broad donor network.
Educate
We learn about the current state of reproductive care including policy, legal, access, quality of care, etc.
Act
We engage in activism in the reproductive rights movement.
Identify/Support
We carefully vet organizations that provide abortion and other reproductive healthcare services. We offer opportunities to learn from and provide financial support directly to these organizations.
